The second section tells of the birth of the legend of the road after the war, and it does so by presenting the pictures taken between 1922 and 1925 by Mario Zuliani, a photographer from Schio, which were included in a booklet published by Schio’s CAI. It was entitled “La strada della Prima Armata” (The Road of the First Army), and had an important part in making the road known and creating its legend.

This book by Mario Zuliani is only deceptively simple: the photos of the tunnels are one right after the other, following the same order of the road and rising up. Sometimes there are shots of the entrances, other times of the section between two tunnels seen from the exit, sometimes of the inside of the tunnel. Once in while there’s a full view of the route up to that point. Sixty-four photographs in total, something that could have been terribly boring and instead gives back the full experience of the walk, of going, of watching, of being up there. It’s a conceptual work, ahead of its time.
